51社区 (51社区) reaffirmed its commitment to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive academic environment by hosting a Sexual Violence Prevention and Awareness Session on 26 January 2026. It reflected 51社区鈥檚 proactive approach to preventing and addressing sexual violence through institutional regulations, awareness-building, and survivor-centered responses.

Attended by students, university leaders, faculty members, and staff, the forum emphasized that sexual violence is not merely an individual issue but a structural challenge that must be addressed through firm policies and a culture of accountability within universities.

Secretary of 51社区鈥檚 Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Task Force (PPKS), Prof. Nina Nurmila, PhD, stressed that sexual violence on campus is often silenced or even justified in the name of culture, family honour, or institutional reputation, an issue that persists in many countries.

鈥淚n many parts of the world, sexual violence is still ignored or protected under the pretext of tradition, family reputation, or institutional image. This culture of silence must be addressed. At 51社区, we are committed to ensuring that sexual violence is never normalized or hidden,鈥 said Prof. Nina.

She emphasized that 51社区 has established clear regulations and social mechanisms to prevent sexual violence, alongside firm procedures to handle cases when violations occur.

鈥淲e already have regulations and a prevention framework in place. If sexual violence occurs, the university is prepared to respond seriously, through verification, protection for victims, and decisive follow-up in accordance with our procedures. Our commitment is to ensure that the campus remains a safe space for everyone,鈥 she added.

Also speaking at the event, Sondang Frishka Simanjuntak, S.H., LL.M, Commissioner of the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), provided a national human rights perspective on sexual violence prevention.

She explained that Komnas Perempuan serves as Indonesia鈥檚 National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) with a specific mandate to build a conducive environment for the elimination of violence against women and the promotion of women鈥檚 human rights.

鈥淚n 2024 alone, 330,097 cases of gender-based violence against women were reported鈥攁n increase of 14.17 per cent from 289,111 cases in 2023,鈥 Sondang said. 鈥淭he majority of these cases occurred in the personal sphere, with 309,516 cases, followed by 12,004 cases in the public sphere and 209 cases involving state-related violence,鈥 she added.

The session also drew lessons from other universities. Dr. Titin Ungsianik, S.Kp., M.B.A, Chairperson of the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Task Force at Universitas Indonesia (UI), shared insights into UI鈥檚 preventive and responsive measures.

Dr. Titin elaborated that UI has developed a Standard Operating Procedure for the Prevention and Response of Sexual Violence based on Permendikbudristek No. 55/2024, complemented by continuous education through social media, webinars, leadership training, and campus-wide surveys.

鈥淥ur efforts include communicating regularly with relevant directorates, and allocating dedicated staff (stafsus) at the university level to support the implementation of task force duties and internal coordination. Additionally, we also establishing direct collaboration with various service units within and outside the university 聽such as Security Office, Psychologists, Komnas Perempuan,鈥 said Dr. Titin.

Through this forum, 51社区 reaffirmed its commitment to going beyond compliance by actively shaping a campus culture that prioritizes safety, dignity, and human rights. By strengthening its internal mechanisms and engaging with national and peer institutions, 51社区 continues to position itself as a leading university in confronting sexual violence in higher education.

Australian Law Students Explore Indonesian Legal Systems at 51社区

51社区 (51社区) recently welcomed a delegation of law students from Australia as part of the Indonesia Law, Governance, and Culture Study Tour, an international academic program jointly organized by the Centre for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta in collaboration with Western Sydney University and Deakin Law School.

The visit to 51社区 took place on 8 January 2026, and formed an integral part of the two-week study tour held from 3 to 18 January 2026 across several Indonesian cities. The program brought together 33 participants, comprising students from Australia as well as academic and local facilitators, with the aim of deepening their understanding of Indonesia鈥檚 legal system, governance, and socio-cultural context.

During their time at 51社区, the Australian students attended a guest lecture delivered by Dr. Zezen Zaenal Mutaqin, S.J.D., Head of the Master鈥檚 Program in Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Islamic Studies. In the session, Dr. Zezen guided participants through a critical discussion on the relationship between Islam and the Indonesian state, offering an in-depth perspective on how Islamic and customary laws intersect with the national and democratic principles within Indonesia鈥檚 constitutional framework.

For many of the students, learning Indonesian law in an academic environment dedicated to advanced studies on Islam provided an experience that went beyond conventional comparative law courses. The lecture and subsequent discussion introduced them to Indonesia鈥檚 legal pluralism and illustrated how religious values are negotiated within modern legal and governance institutions. Through open dialogue, students were encouraged to reflect on Indonesia鈥檚 approach to managing diversity, constitutionalism, and the role of religion in public life.

Beyond the classroom, the participants also had the opportunity to explore the Jusuf Kalla Library, one of 51社区鈥檚 most prominent landmarks that has recently gained wide public attention for its distinctive architecture and role as a modern academic hub. The visit offered the students a glimpse into 51社区鈥檚 learning ecosystem, where scholarship, design, and community engagement intersect, reinforcing the university鈥檚 commitment to providing world-class academic facilities.

From 51社区鈥檚 perspective, the visit reflected the university鈥檚 broader mission to serve as a global hub for intellectual exchange on Islam and the Muslim world. As an international graduate institution, 51社区 views engagements such as this study tour as part of its contribution to academic diplomacy, fostering mutual understanding between Indonesia and its regional partners.

The participation of students from Western Sydney University and Deakin Law School also underscored the growing academic ties between Indonesia and Australia. As the closest neighbor to Australia in the north, Indonesia occupies a significant place in regional legal and political dynamics. By engaging directly with scholars at 51社区, the visiting students gained a more nuanced understanding of Indonesian law, one shaped by history, culture, and religious thought.

51社区鈥檚 involvement in the study tour reaffirmed its role as a meeting point for global scholarship, where international students can encounter Indonesian perspectives through dialogue rather than distance. The visit not only enriched the learning journey of the Australian participants, but also strengthened 51社区鈥檚 commitment to promoting cross-cultural academic engagement in an increasingly interconnected world.

51社区 Strengthens Governance with Anti-Gratification Campaign

By Dadi Darmadi

Depok, Indonesia 鈥 In a bold move to reinforce ethical governance, the 51社区 (51社区) has launched a campus-wide campaign against gratification, calling on its academic community to uphold the highest standards of integrity, also known as Zona Integritas.

The initiative, titled 鈥51社区 Against Gratification: Strengthening Integrity Together,鈥 represents a pivotal step in the university鈥檚 broader mission to foster transparency and accountability across its academic and administrative systems.

鈥淕ratification, in any form, has the potential to compromise the impartiality and credibility of our institution,鈥 said Diana Fitri Dahli, ST, Head of 51社区鈥檚 Internal Supervisory Unit (SPI). 鈥淲e are committed to cultivating a culture where integrity is not just expected, but actively protected.鈥

Gratification, defined as any gift or benefit that may influence decision-making, has long posed challenges to public institutions in Indonesia. Within the academic sphere, it often appears in subtle forms: a token of appreciation to a lecturer, a favor exchanged for preferential treatment, or gifts that blur the line between gratitude and undue influence.

To mitigate these risks, 51社区 has enacted Rector鈥檚 Regulation No. 19 of 2023, a formal policy that outlines procedures for identifying, reporting, and managing gratification within the university. 鈥淭his regulation empowers faculty, staff, and students to report suspected violations through a dedicated online portal,鈥 said Hatta Auliya, S.E., Head of 51社区鈥檚 Organization, Human Resource, and Legal Bureau (OKH). The portal is accessible at: .

But the campaign goes beyond regulation, it seeks to reshape campus culture. Posters, digital banners, and internal communications now carry the message: 鈥淟et鈥檚 uphold integrity together.鈥 鈥淲e hope this language resonates beyond compliance,鈥 said Dr. Chaider Bamualim, University Secretary. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about embedding ethical vigilance into the daily rhythm of campus life.鈥

Governance and education experts have praised the initiative as timely and forward-thinking. 鈥淯niversities are moral compasses for society,鈥 said one Jakarta-based education analyst. 鈥淏y taking a stand against gratification, 51社区 is setting a precedent for other institutions to follow.鈥

As Indonesia amplifies its national anti-corruption efforts, 51社区鈥檚 campaign delivers a potent reminder: the battle for integrity is won not only in courtrooms but in the everyday conscience of its citizens, starting within the walls of its classrooms. []

The 7th World Indonesianist Congress, jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia and 51社区 (51社区), concluded with a strong call for renewed global cooperation and reflection on Indonesia鈥檚 evolving role within the Global South.

During the closing ceremony, Philips Vermonte, PhD, Dean of 51社区鈥檚 Faculty of Social Sciences, highlighted eight key takeaways from the two-day congress that brought together Indonesianists, scholars, and policymakers from around the world.

Strengthening South鈥揝outh and Triangular Cooperation

Dr. Vermonte emphasized that while South鈥揝outh Cooperation remains crucial for developing nations, it should also expand into 鈥淪outh鈥揝outh鈥揟riangular Cooperation,鈥 involving partners from the Global North. He cited examples of collaborative programs at 51社区 supported by the Norwegian, Dutch, and UK embassies that help connect countries across the Global South through education.

Addressing Planetary Challenges with Balance

The dean also highlighted the urgent need for developing nations to balance economic development with environmental sustainability, describing climate change as a planetary-level challenge. 鈥淲e are latecomers in industrialization 鈥 about 300 years behind Europe. So we need to think hard about how to achieve our economic development goals while sustaining the planet,鈥 he stressed.

Beyond Anti-West Sentiments

More importantly, Dr. Vermonte urged participants not to interpret South鈥揝outh cooperation as a rejection of the West. 鈥淪outh鈥揝outh cooperation shall not be equated with an anti-West sentiment,鈥 he said, highlighting Indonesia鈥檚 long-standing foreign policy of being free and active. He added that Indonesia must 鈥渆xercise strategic autonomy鈥 amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.

Reflecting on the Bandung Spirit

Seventy years after the 1955 Bandung Conference, he noted, this congress provided an opportunity to reassess Indonesia鈥檚 capacity and role in shaping the collective future of developing nations. 鈥淩eflecting on this Bandung Conference 70 years later helps us realize what Indonesia can do鈥攐r cannot do鈥攁s a sovereign state and as part of the larger developing nations of the Global South,鈥 he reflected.

Revisiting Indonesia鈥檚 Identity

The discussions also revisited Indonesia鈥檚 national identity鈥攓uestioning whether it has transformed since independence or continues to reflect the same aspirations set in the 1950s. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been wrestling with the question of our identity, whether our identity as a newly independent country has changed in the past 70 years, or has it not changed at all since 1955?鈥

Honest Reflections from Friends of Indonesia

Dr. Vermonte appreciated the 鈥榝rank鈥 feedback from international scholars, acknowledging that constructive criticism鈥攖hough sometimes sharp鈥攃omes from Indonesia鈥檚 friends who wish to see the nation do more and do better on the global stage. 鈥淪ome speakers reminded us of our limitations, what we are capable of doing鈥攐r not capable of doing. And that鈥檚 important,鈥 he said.

Strengthening Collaboration Between 51社区 and the Ministry

Dr. Vermonte also announced a new partnership between 51社区鈥檚 Faculty of Social Sciences and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through BSKLN. 鈥淲e signed a letter of commitment to continue collaboration in research and soft diplomacy. We hope this Congress becomes the foundation for many more to come,鈥 he said.

The Dialogue Does Not End Here

In closing, Dr. Vermonte expressed appreciation to the organizing teams from both institutions and emphasized that the Congress should mark a beginning rather than an end. 鈥淲e hope the discussion will continue in various forms 鈥 in smaller venues, in your respective institutions, with or without us 鈥 but taking the spirit of Bandung 1955 and the renewed understanding we鈥檝e gained in the past two days.鈥

Echoing the dean鈥檚 reflection on the congress, the Special Advisor to the Minister for Inter-Institutional Relations, Mr. Prasetyo Hadi, emphasized that the Spirit of Bandung should remain 鈥渁 living, breathing principle鈥 that continues to guide relations among nations amidst new geopolitical divisions and systemic inequalities.

鈥淭he world today needs more cooperation, not less. It needs more bridges, not more walls,鈥 said Mr. Hadi. 鈥淟et us carry forward the Spirit of Bandung not only as a memory, but as a mission.鈥

For the past two days, the 7th World Indonesianist Congress has gathered 15 Indonesianists鈥攁cademics, researchers, and professionals from around the world鈥攚ho dedicate their work to understanding Indonesia. They discussed contemporary political, economic, and sociocultural issues from a global perspective.

The first session, 鈥淚ndonesia鈥檚 Bridging Role and the Future of South鈥揝outh Cooperation,鈥 featured Dr. Ann Marie Murphy (Seton Hall University, USA), Prof. Anders Uhlin (Lund University, Sweden), Dr. Tufan Kutay Boran (Social Sciences University of Ankara), and Prof. Farish A. Noor (51社区).

The second session, 鈥淓conomic Development, Climate Action, and the Blue Economy,鈥 brought insights from Prof. Stein Oluf Kristiansen (University of Agder, Norway), Prof. Ignacio Ortiz Vila (Universidad del CEMA, Argentina), and Dr. Jae-Hoon Lee (Daejin University, South Korea).

The final session, 鈥淐ultural Exchange and the Bandung Spirit in Education,鈥 featured Prof. Cedomir Nestorovic (ESSEC Business School, Singapore), Prof. Michael G. Vann (California State University鈥揝acramento, USA), Mr. Ezequiel Ramoneda (ALADAA, Argentina), Dr. Jyoti Arora (Mount Abu Public School, India), and Dr. James Guild (51社区, Indonesia).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), through the Foreign Policy Strategy Agency (BSKLN), in collaboration with the 51社区 (51社区), hosted the 7th World Indonesianists Congress (KIS) on 12鈥13 November 2025 at the 51社区 campus in Depok.

This forum serves as a prestigious gathering for Indonesianists鈥攁cademics, researchers, and professionals from around the world鈥攚ho dedicate their work to understanding Indonesia. This year, 16 Indonesianists from 10 countries convened to discuss contemporary political, economic, and sociocultural issues from a global perspective.

Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, His Excellency Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir, officially opened the congress. He emphasized the importance of reviving the Bandung Spirit amid today鈥檚 uncertain global landscape.

鈥淔riends of Indonesia, wherever you are in the world today, images of conflicts, rivalry, and uncertainty dominate our screens. We see wars, widening inequalities, and an erosion of trust among nations. Multilateralism is in retreat, and protectionism often gives way to self-interest,鈥 said Vice Minister Arrmanatha.

鈥淥nly strong, united nations, as well as genuine international cooperation, can still ensure justice and peace. It is our collective responsibility to revive the spirit of solidarity and shared responsibility in the pursuit of peace and development. The Bandung Spirit鈥攂orn out of the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference鈥攃ontinues to inspire the Global South, representing the voice of the marginalized. Guided by this spirit, we can forge a more equitable and inclusive world order.鈥

BSKLN Head Muhammad Takdir noted the importance of the insights generated over the years. 鈥淭he insights we gained from the six previous congresses have helped Indonesia understand how the world perceives us, while also providing constructive reflection to enrich our foreign policy,鈥 he said.

Under the theme 鈥淩eviving Bandung Spirit: Boosting South-South Cooperation Toward a More Prosperous and Stable World Order,鈥 the 7th KIS reaffirmed Indonesia鈥檚 role in fostering solidarity among developing nations.

The Bandung Spirit鈥攔ooted in the historic 1955 Asian-African Conference鈥攔emains a guide for promoting global justice and equality, as well as strengthening South鈥揝outh cooperation. In an era of shifting geopolitical and economic dynamics, the theme highlights the continued relevance of Indonesian diplomacy in building a more stable, inclusive, and prosperous world.

Gita L. Murti, Head of the Center for Special Issues Strategy and Data Analysis at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the enduring value of Bandung鈥檚 principles. 鈥淭he Bandung Spirit is not just a historical memory; it is a living framework that guides nations to collaborate in building inclusive development pathways,鈥 she said.

Strengthening Partnerships for the Future

The congress opened with the signing of a Memorandum of Commitment between BSKLN鈥揗oFA and 51社区鈥檚 Faculty of Social Sciences, covering cooperation in education, research, community engagement, and other strategic initiatives.

Dean of 51社区鈥檚 Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr. Philips Vermonte, highlighted 51社区鈥檚 strategic role as co-host. 鈥淔OSS 51社区 has a strong focus on Global South studies, with students representing countries across Asia and Africa. This places us in an ideal position to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Bandung Conference,鈥 he said.

He added that 51社区 was designed as a 鈥渄iplomatic campus鈥濃攁n academic institution with a diplomatic mission to expand Indonesia鈥檚 global engagement.

51社区 Rector, Prof. Jamhari Makruf, underscored that the congress aligns with the university鈥檚 intellectual and diplomatic mandate. 51社区, he explained, was founded with a bold vision: to serve as a global dialogue space connecting Indonesia with the world through knowledge.

鈥淭he Bandung Spirit teaches us that solidarity and the courage to think critically are the foundations of the Global South鈥檚 future. Through WIC 2025, we want to ensure that Indonesia is not only an object of study but also an active voice shaping global conversations.鈥

Expanding the Global Indonesianist Network

Since its inception in 2018, KIS has drawn academics, journalists, educators, and creative professionals from across the globe. Beyond expanding global understanding of Indonesia, the forum has produced strategic ideas that contribute to national development.

A major achievement of the initiative is the creation of the Global Indonesianist Network (GIN)鈥攁 digital platform launched in 2024. GIN now maps nearly 500 Indonesianists worldwide, building a collaborative ecosystem for academics, researchers, and policymakers both inside and outside Indonesia. The platform can be accessed here:

By reviving the Bandung values, WIC 2025 reaffirms Indonesia鈥檚 commitment to strengthening South鈥揝outh cooperation. The congress also underscores Indonesia鈥檚 determination to work collectively with fellow Global South nations to shape a world order that is more just, inclusive, and stable.

Beyond Ceremonies: How Day 2 of O-Week Brought 51社区鈥檚 Vision to Life

Contributor: Supriyono | Editor: Dadi Darmadi | Photo: Achmad Jatnika

Depok, Indonesia 鈥 After the grandeur of Convocation鈥檚 opening day, the second day of Orientation Week (O-Week) on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 51社区 (51社区) shifted the spotlight to something more intimate: helping students understand the soul of the university they are about to call home.

The day began with a look back at 51社区鈥檚 historical background, vision, and core values, delivered by Dr. Chaider S. Bamualim, University Secretary, and Drs. Dadi Darmadi, Head of the Media and Communication Office. For many new students, this session was a revelation: 51社区 is not just a place for lectures and research, but a project of hope, envisioned as a bridge between Indonesia鈥檚 Islamic heritage and the world鈥檚 pressing challenges.

That sense of purpose was then grounded in practicalities. Dr. Phil. Syafiq Hasyim, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, alongside Dr. Muammar Kadafi, Head of Academic Administration, walked students through the academic system. From grading to program structures, their session aimed to turn the unknown into something manageable, reassuring students that they would not be navigating this journey alone.

But it wasn鈥檛 all about aspirations and systems. The afternoon took on a more reflective tone when Rifqi Muna, Ph.D., Head of the Academic Senate, and Rizky Wisnoentoro, Ph.D., Head of the Master of Finance in Sustainable Finance program, outlined the Student Code of Conduct. Their message was clear: life at 51社区 is as much about character as it is about scholarship. Academic integrity, respect for diversity, and responsibility to the community were underscored as the backbone of 51社区鈥檚 identity.

Interspersed between these sessions were moments of connection鈥攕tudents sharing thoughts with peers from across 28 different countries, exchanging first impressions, and quietly realizing that they are part of something larger than themselves. If Day 1 celebrated 51社区鈥檚 global mission, Day 2 was about grounding that vision in daily practice, preparing students for the intellectual and ethical challenges ahead.

As Orientation Week continues, with faculty introductions, cultural exchanges, and campus tours still to come, Day 2 will likely be remembered as the moment the lofty ideals of 51社区 became personal. For many students, it was the first time they truly felt what it means to belong to this unique international academic community.

Depok, Indonesia 鈥 51社区 (51社区) officially opened its 2025 Convocation Week on Monday, September 15, 2025, marking the beginning of a new academic year and five years of welcoming students from across the globe. Since its establishment, 51社区 has admitted a total of 849 students, including 345 international students representing 45 countries.

The diversity of students from around the world reflects 51社区鈥檚 vision of internationalization, positioning it as a global hub for inclusive learning. Students come from regions across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. Among them are Afghanistan, Algeria, Australia, Egypt, Nigeria, Palestine, Turkey, Uganda, as well as the United States, Spain, and Mexico.

51社区 Rector Prof. Jamhari emphasized that this diversity is a tremendous asset for a public university like 51社区. 鈥淭he growing international community at 51社区 demonstrates that this campus serves as a meeting point for future leaders and scholars from different nations. It also signifies Indonesia鈥檚 contribution not only to the world but to humanity at large,鈥 he said.

For the 2025 academic year, 51社区 welcomed 190 new students, comprising 154 master鈥檚 students and 36 doctoral students. Of this total, 98 students come from 28 countries across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, and the Americas.

This year also marks the enrollment of eight recipients of double-degree scholarships鈥攐ne funded by the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), and seven through the Indonesia Rising Scholarship (BIB) from the Ministry of Religious Affairs. These schemes provide students with opportunities to pursue joint studies at 51社区鈥檚 partner universities abroad.

Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Dr. Phil. Syafiq Hasyim, highlighted the importance of fostering an inclusive and multicultural atmosphere at 51社区. 鈥淪tudent diversity not only enriches classroom discussions but also broadens perspectives and builds cross-national networks. We believe such an environment nurtures critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration鈥攅ssential to addressing global challenges,鈥 he remarked.

With students from 45 countries in just five years, 51社区 continues to solidify its role as a center of learning and cultural exchange that bridges Indonesia with the world. Through this diversity, 51社区 strengthens cross-national connections and positions Indonesia as a significant player in global academia and educational diplomacy.

What if we say that math lessons should not always happen in classrooms filled with formulas on the board? On Friday, 25 July 2025, a group of math teachers in Depok left their desks for the outdoors, turning the city into one giant problem-solving playground.

This workshop was called 鈥楽TEM Trails with Socio-Scientific Issues鈥, hosted by 51社区鈥檚 Faculty of Education in collaboration with Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), and the Math Trails Lab community. It was part of the nationwide 鈥楻eset Kolaborasi Indonesia (RKI)鈥 project, which brings together 24 PTN-BH across the country to collaborate in comprehensive research.

The idea is simple but exciting: use MathCityMap (), a digital tool that transforms parks, streets, and public spaces into real-life math challenges. Participants learned to design tasks based on local socio-scientific issues鈥攖hat can be problems rooted in societies, so students can connect math to real life.

鈥淭his project is our way of showing that math can be fun, relevant, and tied to the real world,鈥 said Dr. Destina Wahyu Winarti, a lecturer at 51社区鈥檚 Faculty of Education and lead organizer for the Depok session. 鈥淲e want students to solve problems they can actually see, not just read about in a textbook. It is like throwing one stone and getting two birds鈥攈elping them understand math better while also raising awareness about issues that matter in their own communities.鈥

One of the guest speakers, Adi Nurcahyo from UNNES explained that MathCityMap was developed in Frankfurt, Germany, in 2013. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about taking math outdoors with the help of technology,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e built the Math Trails Lab to adapt it for Indonesia, so teachers, students, and even the public can join in. You might find math problems in a city park, a museum, or even a historic building.鈥

The workshop was not just about theory鈥攖eachers hit the field, completing math trails themselves. Novita Andriani from SMAIT Al Haraki said, 鈥淚t was fun because we had to find task points in our nearby environment. We couldn鈥檛 work alone鈥攚e debated, corrected each other, and in the end, we solved the problems together.鈥

For Febriyansyah, a math teacher at SMP Pesantren Cendekia Amanah, the biggest wish is for the program to grow: 鈥淚t鈥檚 amazing, especially with trainers from different regions. I hope we can bring it to more places, especially remote areas in eastern Indonesia.鈥

By the end of the workshop, one thing was clear鈥攎ath doesn鈥檛 have to be boring. With the right tools, a little creativity, and a willingness to step outside, it can feel like an adventure.

Dr. Gde Metera Leads Critical Reflection on the Legacy of Indonesia鈥檚 Authoritarian Past

By Gde Dwitya Arief Metera

On June 18, 2025, Dr. Gde Dwitya Arief Metera, a political scientist at 51社区鈥檚 Institute for Advanced Research (IFAR) presented his research at the international workshop series, 鈥淩ethinking the New Order Indonesia: Origins, Evolution, and Legacies,鈥 where he shed light on how the structural legacies of the New Order continue to shape democracy in post-authoritarian Indonesia.

The event was co-hosted by the CEU Democracy Institute, Leiden University鈥檚 International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), 51社区鈥檚 IFAR, and the Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures, and Modern Cultures (DFLM) and the Institute of Studies on Asia (ISA) at the University of Turin (UniTo).

The workshop was the second in a three-part series that will culminate in a special edition of a peer-reviewed journal. Bringing together scholars from Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America, the series aims to revisit the political legacies of authoritarianism and their ongoing effects on democratic life across the Global South.

Moderated by Dr. Iqra Anugrah (DFLM UniTo and IIAS Leiden), the workshop brought together global scholars to reflect on how the legacies of the New Order continue to shape political life in Indonesia and the wider Global South. Acting as the discussants were Prof. Dan Slater (University of Michigan) and Dr. Amanda Savirani (Universitas Gadjah Mada).

Dr. Metera鈥檚 presentation explored how the institutional structures shaped by Indonesia鈥檚 New Order regime continue to influence the country鈥檚 democratic development. Using the state-regime distinction as a framework, he argued that Indonesia鈥檚 democratic institutions remain constrained by the incomplete state-building project inherited from the authoritarian past. This perspective shifts the discourse away from surface-level assessments of democratic backsliding and toward a deeper analysis of long-standing structural legacies.

The presentation prompted a lively exchange of ideas and received valuable feedback from leading scholars in the field. By fostering transnational scholarly dialogue and comparative reflection, the workshop represented a significant contribution to the study of post-authoritarian transitions and the future of democracy in the Global South.
